Megafauna Central Guide
Journey Back in Time: Discover the Giants of the Australian Outback Guide
Prepare to be amazed by the colossal creatures that once roamed Central Australia at Megafauna Central in Alice Springs. This fascinating attraction brings to life the prehistoric world of giant marsupials, reptiles, and birds that inhabited the region millions of years ago. Through interactive displays, fossil replicas, and captivating storytelling, you'll embark on a journey back in time to discover the incredible megafauna that shaped the Australian landscape. Megafauna Central focuses on the fossil discoveries made at the Alcoota Scientific Reserve, located northeast of Alice Springs. This rich fossil site has yielded a treasure trove of information about the megafauna that thrived in the area during the late Miocene epoch, approximately 8 million years ago. The fossils reveal a diverse ecosystem of giant kangaroos, carnivorous birds, and massive reptiles, offering a glimpse into a world vastly different from the one we know today. The research conducted at Alcoota continues to shed light on the evolution and extinction of these magnificent creatures. At Megafauna Central, you can explore life-size replicas of megafauna skeletons, examine fossil casts, and learn about the scientific process of paleontological research. Interactive displays allow you to compare your size to that of a giant kangaroo or test your knowledge of prehistoric creatures. The center also offers educational programs and guided tours for visitors of all ages. While Megafauna Central doesn't have a specific culinary focus, you can find a variety of dining options in Alice Springs that showcase the unique flavors of the outback.
