Xunantunich Guide
Xunantunich: A Majestic Mayan Center with a Ferry Ride Guide
Discover the captivating Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, perched atop a ridge overlooking the Mopan River, near the town of San Jose Succotz. This relatively compact site offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the ancient Maya, with its impressive temples, palaces, and plazas. The name "Xunantunich" means "Stone Woman" in the Maya language, a name given to the site in modern times due to local legends of a ghostly woman seen there. Xunantunich flourished during the Classic period (around 600-900 AD), and its strategic location suggests it was an important center for trade and political control. The site is dominated by "El Castillo," a towering pyramid that rises over 130 feet above the plaza. The pyramid is adorned with intricate stucco friezes depicting Mayan rulers, gods, and cosmological symbols. These friezes are considered some of the finest examples of Mayan art in Belize. Excavations at Xunantunich have revealed valuable artifacts, including pottery, jade ornaments, and human remains, providing insights into the daily lives and religious beliefs of the Mayan people. Exploring Xunantunich is a rewarding experience. You can climb El Castillo for breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, wander through the residential areas, and admire the intricate carvings on the stelae. The site is easily accessible and well-maintained, making it a great option for families and those with limited mobility. After your visit, consider exploring the nearby village of San Jose Succotz, where you can sample local Belizean cuisine, such as panades (fried corn tortillas filled with beans or fish) and garnaches (fried tortillas topped with beans, cheese, and onions).
