Johnston Canyon is a breathtaking natural wonder located in Banff National Park. This deep canyon, carved over thousands of years by the relentless force of Johnston Creek, offers a spectacular hiking experience for visitors of all skill levels. The well-maintained trails lead you past cascading waterfalls, through narrow passageways, and to stunning viewpoints overlooking the turquoise waters below. Johnston Canyon's geological history dates back to the last ice age, when glacial meltwater began carving its way through the limestone bedrock. Over time, the creek eroded the rock, creating the dramatic canyon walls and the series of waterfalls that are now the canyon's main attractions. The canyon was named after George Johnston, an early settler in the area. The most popular activity in Johnston Canyon is hiking. The Lower Falls are easily accessible via a paved trail, making it suitable for families with young children. A slightly more challenging hike leads to the Upper Falls, which offer a more dramatic display of cascading water. For experienced hikers, the trail continues to the Ink Pots, a series of cold-water springs with unique mineral deposits. While there are no restaurants directly in the canyon, the nearby Johnston Canyon Lodge & Bungalows offers dining options.
Transportation
During peak season (May to October), the Banff Roam Route 9 provides direct service to Johnston Canyon from Banff. Check the Roam Transit website for schedules and fares. Alternatively, you can drive to Johnston Canyon and park in the designated parking lot. Parking can be limited during peak season, so arrive early.
