Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) Guide
Marienbrücke: Walk Among the Clouds with a Fairytale View Guide
Marienbrücke, or Mary's Bridge, is a must-see for anyone visiting Hohenschwangau. This pedestrian bridge offers breathtaking panoramic views of Neuschwanstein Castle, the Pollät Gorge, and the surrounding Bavarian Alps. Suspended high above the gorge, the bridge provides a unique vantage point for capturing the iconic image of the fairytale castle. Prepare to be amazed by the sheer beauty and grandeur of the landscape. The bridge was originally built in 1845 by King Maximilian II, the father of King Ludwig II, as a gift for his wife, Queen Marie. It was initially a wooden structure, but was later replaced with a stronger iron construction in 1866. The bridge's name honors Queen Marie, and it has become an integral part of the Neuschwanstein experience, offering visitors an unparalleled perspective on the castle's architectural splendor and dramatic setting. The primary activity at Marienbrücke is, of course, taking in the stunning views and capturing memorable photos. The bridge can get crowded, especially during peak season, so arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon is recommended to avoid the largest crowds. From the bridge, you can also access hiking trails that lead deeper into the Pollät Gorge, offering further opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the area. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, as the path to the bridge involves a moderate uphill walk.
Transportation
From Hohenschwangau village, follow the signs towards Neuschwanstein Castle. You can walk uphill to the bridge (approximately 30-40 minutes). Alternatively, during peak season, a shuttle bus operates from the village to a point closer to the bridge, reducing the walking time. From the shuttle stop, it's still a 10-15 minute uphill walk to the bridge.
