Balos Beach Guide

Balos Beach: A Turquoise Paradise Awaits Guide

Welcome to Balos Beach, a breathtaking lagoon located on the northwest coast of Crete. Famous for its shallow, turquoise waters and fine white sand, Balos is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the island. The contrast between the vibrant blue sea, the pinkish sand, and the rugged landscape creates a truly unforgettable scene. Prepare to be mesmerized by the natural beauty and tranquility of this unique location. While Balos doesn't have a rich historical narrative like some other Cretan sites, its geological formation is fascinating. The lagoon is formed by the meeting of three seas: the Aegean, the Ionian, and the Libyan. This convergence creates a unique ecosystem and contributes to the stunning colors of the water. The nearby Gramvousa island, with its Venetian fortress, adds a touch of historical intrigue to the overall experience. Balos offers a variety of activities for visitors. Swimming and sunbathing are, of course, the most popular. The shallow waters are perfect for families with children. You can also explore the lagoon by wading through the water, discovering hidden coves and sandbars. For the more adventurous, hiking to the top of Gramvousa island to explore the fortress offers panoramic views of the lagoon and surrounding area. Boat trips from Kissamos are a convenient way to reach Balos and often include a stop at Gramvousa. While there aren't restaurants directly on Balos beach, boat trips usually offer lunch options. You can also find small tavernas in the nearby village of Kaliviani.

Transportation

The most common way to reach Balos is by taking a boat trip from Kissamos port. These boats usually depart in the morning and return in the late afternoon. Alternatively, you can drive to Balos, but be prepared for a bumpy and unpaved road for the last few kilometers. From the parking area, there's a 20-30 minute walk down a path to the beach. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during the hot summer months. There are also buses from Chania to Kissamos, where you can catch the boat to Balos.
