Skaros Rock, a dramatic promontory jutting out into the Aegean Sea near Oia, Santorini, is a must-see for any visitor to the island. This imposing rock formation was once the site of a fortified medieval settlement, offering stunning panoramic views and a glimpse into Santorini's rich history. While the settlement is now in ruins, the hike to Skaros Rock is a rewarding experience, offering breathtaking scenery and a sense of adventure. Skaros was the capital of Santorini until the 18th century, chosen for its strategic location and natural defenses. The Venetians built a fortress on the rock in the 13th century, providing protection from pirates and invaders. The settlement thrived for centuries, but was eventually abandoned after a series of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions made it too dangerous to inhabit. Today, only a few remnants of the original buildings remain, including the Theoskepasti Church, which is partially built into the rock face. The hike to Skaros Rock is a moderate challenge, taking approximately 30-45 minutes each way. The trail starts from Imerovigli and descends down a steep path to the base of the rock. From there, you can climb up to the Theoskepasti Church and explore the ruins of the old settlement. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, especially during the hot summer months. The views from the top of Skaros Rock are simply spectacular, offering unparalleled vistas of the caldera, the surrounding islands, and the iconic white-washed villages of Santorini.
Transportation
The starting point for the hike to Skaros Rock is in Imerovigli, which is easily accessible by bus from Fira. Buses run frequently between Fira and Oia, stopping in Imerovigli along the way. From the Imerovigli bus stop, follow the signs towards Skaros Rock. Alternatively, you can walk from Fira to Imerovigli, which takes approximately 20-30 minutes and offers stunning views of the caldera.
