Preveli Palm Beach Guide
Paradise Found: Escape to Preveli Palm Beach Guide
Preveli Palm Beach, also known as Palm Beach or Finikas, is a truly unique and unforgettable destination on the southern coast of Crete. This stunning beach is famous for its lush palm forest that lines the mouth of the Kourtaliotis Gorge, creating a tropical oasis where the river meets the sea. The combination of the palm trees, the freshwater river, and the crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea makes Preveli Palm Beach a must-see for any visitor to Crete. The palm forest at Preveli is a rare and protected ecosystem, adding to the beach's unique appeal. The river Kourtaliotis flows through the gorge and empties into the sea, creating a refreshing freshwater stream that runs along the beach. In 2010, a fire devastated a large portion of the palm forest, but thanks to natural regeneration and conservation efforts, the forest has made a remarkable recovery. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the sea, exploring the river, and relaxing on the sandy beach. You can also hike up the Kourtaliotis Gorge for stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Kayaks and paddleboards are often available for rent, allowing you to explore the coastline and the river at your own pace. While there are no restaurants directly on the beach, there are tavernas and cafes located a short distance away, offering traditional Cretan cuisine and refreshing drinks.
