Pura Gunung Kawi: Ancient Royal Tombs Carved into Stone Cliffs Guide

Discover the awe-inspiring Pura Gunung Kawi, an 11th-century temple complex featuring ancient royal tombs carved directly into towering cliffs. Located near Tampaksiring, this unique archaeological site offers a glimpse into Bali's rich history and artistic heritage. The monumental carvings, set amidst lush rice paddies and the sacred Pakerisan River, create a dramatic and unforgettable scene. Pura Gunung Kawi, meaning "Mountain of Poetry," is believed to be a memorial complex dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana Dynasty and his queens. The ten candi (shrines) are carved into the cliff face, resembling temples but actually serving as tombs. These impressive structures are thought to have been created around the 11th century. The site is divided into several sections, each with its own unique features and significance. The Pakerisan River, which flows through the complex, is considered sacred and adds to the spiritual atmosphere of the site. A visit to Pura Gunung Kawi involves a descent down a long flight of stairs, passing through picturesque rice terraces. Once at the bottom, you can explore the various candi, marvel at the intricate carvings, and soak in the serene atmosphere. Remember to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered) and be prepared for some walking. The site also offers opportunities to learn about Balinese history and culture from local guides. The surrounding rice paddies provide stunning photo opportunities, especially during sunrise and sunset.
