The Chureito Pagoda, a vibrant vermillion structure perched on a mountainside, offers arguably the most iconic and breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. This five-storied pagoda is a photographer's dream, especially during cherry blossom season when the landscape is awash in pink, creating a stunning contrast with the majestic mountain backdrop. Even outside of cherry blossom season, the pagoda provides spectacular vistas throughout the year, with vibrant autumn foliage or snow-capped peaks adding to the scenic beauty. The pagoda is part of the Arakura Sengen Shrine, built as a peace memorial in 1963. It commemorates those who lost their lives in wars. While the shrine itself has a longer history, the pagoda is a relatively recent addition, quickly becoming a symbol of the region and a must-see for visitors. Climbing the nearly 400 steps to reach the pagoda is a rewarding experience, not only for the panoramic views but also for the sense of accomplishment. Visitors can enjoy hiking around the Arakura Sengen Shrine grounds, exploring the surrounding forest, and of course, capturing stunning photographs of Mount Fuji and the pagoda. Transportation
From Tokyo, take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station. Transfer to the Fujikyu Railway Line to Fujiyoshida Station. From Fujiyoshida Station, you can take a local bus to the Arakura Sengen Shrine entrance (approx. 10 minutes). From the bus stop, it's about a 15-20 minute walk up the stairs to the pagoda.
