Oshino Hakkai: Eight Sacred Springs of Fuji Guide

Oshino Hakkai is a set of eight ponds located in Oshino Village, near Mount Fuji. Fed by snowmelt filtering down from the mountain, these crystal-clear ponds are revered for their purity and beauty. The village itself offers a charming glimpse into traditional Japanese rural life, with thatched-roof houses, watermills, and souvenir shops. The ponds of Oshino Hakkai have a long history, dating back to the Edo period. They were considered sacred sites, believed to be inhabited by deities. Pilgrims would visit the ponds to purify themselves before climbing Mount Fuji. The ponds are also fed by an underground aquifer, which takes approximately 80 years for the snowmelt to filter through the volcanic rock, resulting in exceptionally clear and clean water. Visitors can stroll through the village, admire the picturesque scenery, and sample the pure spring water from the ponds. Many shops sell local crafts, snacks, and souvenirs. You can also try some of the local culinary specialties, such as kusa mochi (rice cakes flavored with mugwort) and grilled freshwater fish. The area is particularly beautiful during the cherry blossom season and autumn foliage.
