Na Bolom Cultural Center Guide
Na Bolom: A Journey into Mayan Culture and Conservation Guide
Na Bolom, meaning "House of the Jaguar" in the Tzotzil Mayan language, is a unique cultural center in San Cristobal de las Casas. More than just a museum, it's a guesthouse, library, and research center dedicated to preserving the culture and traditions of the Lacandon Maya and promoting environmental conservation in the Chiapas region. It offers a fascinating insight into the lives and beliefs of the indigenous people. Na Bolom was founded in 1950 by Frans Blom, a Danish archaeologist, and Gertrude Duby Blom, a Swiss journalist and environmentalist. They dedicated their lives to studying and supporting the Lacandon Maya, documenting their culture, and advocating for their rights. Gertrude, known as "Queen of the Lacandon," was a passionate advocate for the rainforest and its inhabitants. The center is housed in a former monastery, adding to its historical significance. Visitors can take a guided tour of the museum, which showcases artifacts, photographs, and information about the Lacandon Maya and the work of Frans and Gertrude Blom. You can also stay in the guesthouse, browse the extensive library, and participate in workshops and cultural events. The center's beautiful gardens provide a tranquil escape from the city. Na Bolom also offers opportunities to learn about the environmental challenges facing the region and support conservation efforts.
