Markthal: A Feast for the Senses in Rotterdam Guide
Welcome to the Markthal, Rotterdam's architectural marvel and culinary paradise! This iconic building is more than just a marketplace; it's a vibrant hub where food, architecture, and culture collide. Prepare to be amazed by the stunning artwork adorning the interior ceiling, a massive and colorful display that depicts fresh produce, flowers, and other market staples. The Markthal is a must-see destination for any visitor to Rotterdam, offering a unique and unforgettable experience. The Markthal opened in October 2014 and was designed by architectural firm MVRDV. Its innovative design features a horseshoe-shaped structure enclosing a bustling marketplace, with apartments built into the arch above. This unique concept combines living, shopping, and dining in a single, visually striking building. The artwork on the ceiling, officially titled "Cornucopia," was created by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam and covers an area of 11,000 square meters, making it one of the largest artworks of its kind. At the Markthal, you can explore a wide array of food stalls offering everything from fresh produce and artisanal cheeses to exotic spices and international cuisine. Sample local delicacies like stroopwafels and bitterballen, or indulge in flavors from around the world. The Markthal is also a great place to find unique souvenirs and gifts. Beyond the food stalls, you can also find restaurants and bars offering a variety of dining options.
