Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) Guide
Witness the Dawn: Conquer Seongsan Ilchulbong! Guide
Prepare to be mesmerized by Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as Sunrise Peak, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Jeju Island's most iconic landmarks. This dramatic tuff cone rose from the sea in a shallow seabed about 5,000 years ago due to hydrovolcanic eruptions. Its unique crater, resembling a giant crown, is surrounded by 99 sharp rocks, creating a breathtaking panorama. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual traveler, the climb to the summit is an unforgettable experience, especially at sunrise. The history of Seongsan Ilchulbong is deeply intertwined with Jeju's volcanic origins. The crater, once a vibrant ecosystem, is now largely covered in grass, offering a stark contrast to the surrounding blue ocean. During the Joseon Dynasty, the peak served as a strategic point for defense. Today, it stands as a symbol of Jeju's natural beauty and resilience, attracting visitors from around the globe. Imagine the stories whispered by the wind as you stand atop this ancient volcanic marvel. Embark on the relatively short but moderately challenging hike to the summit for unparalleled views. Capture stunning photos of the sunrise painting the sky with vibrant hues. Explore the surrounding coastal trails and marvel at the unique rock formations. For a taste of local culture, visit the nearby Haenyeo (women divers) who harvest seafood from the ocean depths. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly linked to the peak itself, the surrounding Seongsan village offers numerous restaurants serving fresh seafood dishes, including abalone porridge and grilled mackerel, providing a delicious taste of Jeju's culinary delights.
