Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak Guide

Sunrise Spectacle: Conquer Jeju's Iconic Volcanic Crater Guide

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, also known as Sunrise Peak, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Jeju Island's most recognizable landmarks. This dramatic volcanic crater rose from the sea in a hydrovolcanic eruption about 5,000 years ago. Its unique bowl-shaped formation and stunning coastal views make it a must-see destination for any visitor to Jeju. Historically, Seongsan Ilchulbong held strategic importance, serving as a natural fortress. Today, it's a protected natural monument, showcasing the island's unique geological heritage. The name "Ilchulbong" translates to "Sunrise Peak," and as the name suggests, witnessing the sunrise from the summit is an unforgettable experience. The main activity is hiking to the top of the crater. The trail is well-maintained but can be steep in places, taking about 25-30 minutes to reach the summit. Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding coastline, the emerald-green crater, and the vast ocean. There are also horse riding opportunities near the base of the peak. While there aren't specific culinary traditions directly linked to the peak itself, nearby Seongsan village offers a variety of seafood restaurants where you can sample fresh catches of the day.
