Birdwatcher's Paradise: Discover the Wild Beauty of Kumana Guide

Kumana National Park, also known as Yala East National Park, is a hidden gem on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. This 18,149-hectare park is renowned for its diverse birdlife, particularly its large flocks of migratory waterbirds. Beyond the avian wonders, Kumana also boasts a rich ecosystem of lagoons, mangroves, and forests, providing habitat for a variety of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. It's a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure. Kumana was initially declared a sanctuary in 1938 and later upgraded to a national park in 1969. Its strategic location along major migratory routes makes it a crucial stopover for birds traveling between Asia and Europe. The park's history is also intertwined with local communities who have traditionally relied on its resources for fishing and agriculture. Conservation efforts are ongoing to balance the needs of both wildlife and local populations. The primary activity in Kumana National Park is wildlife safaris. Guided jeep tours offer the best chance to spot a variety of birds, including painted storks, herons, egrets, and spoonbills. Lucky visitors may also encounter elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and crocodiles. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding during the migratory season (April-September). Remember to bring binoculars, sunscreen, and insect repellent. While there are no restaurants within the park, packed lunches and water are essential.
