Blue Hole Guide
Discover the Mysterious Blue Hole: A Freshwater Oasis in the Keys Guide
The Blue Hole on Big Pine Key is a unique and fascinating geological feature, a freshwater-filled quarry that's become a haven for wildlife. This unexpected oasis in the heart of the Lower Keys offers a glimpse into a different side of the island chain, far removed from the beaches and ocean views. It's a must-see for nature lovers and those seeking a unique Florida Keys experience. The Blue Hole was originally a limestone quarry, mined for road fill and other construction purposes. When the quarrying was abandoned, it filled with freshwater, creating a sinkhole. Because of its freshwater source, it became a vital water source for the endangered Key deer, as well as other wildlife. The surrounding area is part of the National Key Deer Refuge, established to protect this unique species. Visitors to the Blue Hole can observe a variety of wildlife, including Key deer, alligators, turtles, and numerous bird species. A viewing platform provides a safe and convenient way to observe the animals in their natural habitat. While swimming is not permitted in the Blue Hole, the surrounding trails offer opportunities for hiking and exploring the diverse ecosystem of the National Key Deer Refuge. Remember to bring your binoculars and camera to capture the beauty of this natural wonder. There are no specific culinary traditions associated with the Blue Hole itself, but nearby restaurants on Big Pine Key offer a variety of dining options.
