Witness Volcanic Spires: Pinnacles Overlook Guide

Venture to the Pinnacles Overlook for a fascinating glimpse into Crater Lake's volcanic past. This easily accessible viewpoint offers stunning views of the Pinnacles, unique geological formations created by fumaroles – vents that released hot gases during the cooling of volcanic ash flows. The Pinnacles are a testament to the powerful forces that shaped this extraordinary landscape. The Pinnacles were formed after the climactic eruption of Mount Mazama, the volcano that eventually collapsed to form Crater Lake. As hot ash flows cooled and solidified, escaping gases created vents. The ash surrounding these vents was cemented by the gases, forming durable spires that resisted erosion. Over time, the softer surrounding ash eroded away, leaving behind the dramatic Pinnacles we see today. The primary activity at Pinnacles Overlook is admiring the unique geological formations and taking photographs. The overlook provides a clear and unobstructed view of the Pinnacles, allowing visitors to appreciate their size, shape, and texture. A short, paved trail leads from the parking area to the overlook, making it accessible to visitors of all abilities. The area is also a good spot for wildlife viewing, so keep an eye out for birds and other animals.
