False Kiva Guide

False Kiva: A Mysterious and Breathtaking Overlook Guide

The False Kiva is a unique and somewhat controversial archaeological site located within Canyonlands National Park, near Moab. It's not an official, sanctioned trail, but rather a constructed stone circle perched dramatically on a ledge overlooking a vast canyon. The origin and purpose of the structure are shrouded in mystery, adding to its allure. It offers unparalleled panoramic views, especially at sunset. The history of the False Kiva is debated. It's believed to have been constructed by an unknown individual or group, possibly as a modern interpretation of ancient Native American kivas. Unlike authentic ancestral Puebloan kivas, which are typically subterranean and used for ceremonial purposes, the False Kiva is above ground and its purpose remains unclear. Its existence raises questions about preservation, access, and the interpretation of cultural heritage. Visiting the False Kiva involves a moderately challenging hike of approximately 2 miles roundtrip. The trail is unmarked and requires some scrambling and route-finding skills. The reward is the stunning view from the kiva itself. Please be respectful of the site and its fragile environment. Do not disturb the stones or leave any trace of your visit. Remember to bring plenty of water and wear appropriate footwear. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the False Kiva itself, Moab offers a variety of dining options to enjoy before or after your visit.
