The Needles Guide
The Needles: A Labyrinth of Stone in Canyonlands Guide
The Needles district of Canyonlands National Park is characterized by its towering sandstone spires, or "needles," that create a unique and visually stunning landscape. This area offers a more remote and rugged experience compared to Island in the Sky, with opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and exploring the intricate network of canyons and rock formations. It's a haven for adventurers seeking solitude and natural beauty. The Needles' geological history is similar to that of the rest of Canyonlands, with the canyons carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers over millions of years. However, the unique formations of the Needles are due to a specific type of erosion that has sculpted the sandstone into these distinctive shapes. The area also has a rich cultural history, with evidence of Ancestral Puebloan and later Ute and Navajo presence. Visitors to The Needles can enjoy a variety of activities. Hiking is the most popular, with trails ranging from short day hikes to multi-day backpacking trips. Popular trails include Chesler Park Loop, Druid Arch, and the Joint Trail. Rock climbing is also a popular activity. Camping is available at the Needles Campground, and stargazing is excellent due to the dark night skies.
