Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is named after Lewis Ginter, a prominent Richmond businessman and philanthropist. The land was originally part of his Lakeside Wheel Club, a recreational area. After Ginter's death in 1897, his niece, Grace Arents, inherited the property. Arents, a dedicated philanthropist herself, transformed the land into a beautiful garden and educational center, which she opened to the public in 1913. Over the years, the garden has expanded and evolved, becoming one of the premier botanical gardens in the United States. Visitors to Lewis Ginter can explore a variety of themed gardens, including the Rose Garden, the Asian Valley, the Children's Garden, and the Conservatory, a glass-enclosed structure housing a diverse collection of tropical plants. The garden also hosts seasonal events, such as Dominion Energy GardenFest of Lights during the winter holidays and Butterflies LIVE! in the spring and summer.
