Don't miss the informative exhibits that showcase the unique features of Capitol Reef, from the Waterpocket Fold to the Fremont Culture. The Capitol Reef area has a rich history, predating the national park by centuries. The Fremont people inhabited the area from about 700 to 1300 AD, leaving behind petroglyphs and granaries that can still be seen today. Later, Mormon pioneers settled in the fertile valleys, establishing the town of Fruita, which is now preserved within the park. The Visitor Center provides insights into both the ancient and more recent history of this fascinating region. At the Visitor Center, you can watch the park film, browse the bookstore for souvenirs and educational materials, and obtain permits for backcountry camping. Rangers are available to answer your questions and provide recommendations for hikes, scenic drives, and other activities based on your interests and abilities. Consider joining a ranger-led program to delve deeper into the park's natural and cultural wonders. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the Visitor Center, the nearby town of Torrey offers a variety of dining options featuring local and regional cuisine.
