False Cape State Park Guide
Wilderness Awaits: Explore False Cape State Park Guide
Venture into the untamed wilderness of False Cape State Park, a remote and pristine coastal park accessible only by foot, bicycle, boat, or park-operated tram. Located on the Outer Banks of Virginia, this park offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of a virtually untouched landscape. Explore miles of undeveloped beaches, maritime forests, and brackish lagoons, and discover the rich history and diverse wildlife that call this place home. False Cape State Park preserves a significant portion of Virginia's barrier island ecosystem. The area was once inhabited by Native Americans and later by European settlers who established small communities. The park's name comes from its appearance to sailors, who often mistook it for Cape Henry, leading to shipwrecks. Today, the park protects the remnants of these historic settlements and provides a sanctuary for endangered species like the loggerhead sea turtle and piping plover. Activities at False Cape State Park are geared towards nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking and biking are popular ways to explore the park's trails, which wind through diverse habitats. Camping is available at designated sites, offering a chance to spend a night under the stars. Fishing and crabbing are permitted in certain areas, and birdwatching is exceptional, with opportunities to spot a variety of migratory birds. Be sure to check the park's website for information on guided tours and special events.
